AiVIF.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.03%, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.44%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 2.00%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 0.83% or 4.44 points to trade at 539.48 at the close. Meanwhile, The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) added 0.68% or 1.28 points to end at 188.49 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) was up 0.17% or 0.26 points to 149.35 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which fell 3.79% or 3.64 points to trade at 92.29 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 3.60% or 6.67 points to end at 178.43 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was down 2.58% or 4.55 points to 172.01.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Textron Inc (NYSE:TXT) which rose 5.27% to 73.58, Lumen Technologies Inc (NYSE:LUMN) which was up 3.85% to settle at 5.40 and Exelon Corporation (NASDAQ:EXC) which gained 2.68% to close at 42.87.

The worst performers were NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which was down 15.10% to 34.67 in late trade, Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which lost 7.77% to settle at 309.73 and Paramount Global Class B (NASDAQ:PARA) which was down 6.97% to 18.15 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Summit Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:SMMT) which rose 194.27% to 2.31, Pacifico Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:PAFO) which was up 60.60% to settle at 8.03 and Eterna Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ERNA) which gained 43.87% to close at 4.46.

The worst performers were Gossamer Bio Inc (NASDAQ:GOSS) which was down 74.60% to 2.36 in late trade, INVO Bioscience Inc (NASDAQ:INVO) which lost 35.62% to settle at 0.47 and MEI Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:MEIP) which was down 33.52% to 0.26 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2183 to 890 and 118 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2609 fell and 1101 advanced, while 190 ended unchanged.

Shares in NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) fell to 52-week lows; down 15.10% or 6.16 to 34.67. Shares in Gossamer Bio Inc (NASDAQ:GOSS) fell to all time lows; losing 74.60% or 6.93 to 2.36. Shares in INVO Bioscience Inc (NASDAQ:INVO) fell to 5-year lows; down 35.62% or 0.26 to 0.47. Shares in MEI Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:MEIP) fell to all time lows; falling 33.52% or 0.13 to 0.26.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.84% to 22.17.

Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.15% or 2.65 to $1,783.95 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 3.44% or 2.65 to hit $74.28 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 3.85% or 3.18 to trade at $79.50 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.24% to 1.05, while USD/JPY rose 0.23% to 137.05.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.28% at 105.54.
